Code of Conduct

Code of conduct

The Post Academic Athenas Slack Channel and community is dedicated to providing a safe peer support experience for female-identified and non binary people to share wisdom and to talk about alternatives to a traditional academic job.

We are open to people of all ages, sexual orientations, disabilities, physical appearances, body size, race, religion (or lack thereof) or country of origin. We do not tolerate harassment in any form.

We know that participants may come to the community with sensitive information about their experiences in academia. We ask that people who share sensitive information make it clear if it is meant to be kept confidential. We ask participants to commit to honor those requests.

Sexist, racist, discriminatory, or harassing language and imagery is not appropriate in the Athenas community. Participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the Slack channel, email list or workshops.

Participants in our group are free to be anonymous, to include or not include information about their current or past positions or to withhold information about where they work or live to preserve anonymity. Participants are encouraged to ask others to keep information confidential if they desire. Anonymity is not an excuse for harassing behavior.

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, personal attacks, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

Exception: Discussion or images related to sex, pornography, discriminatory language, or similar is welcome if it meets all of the following criteria:

  • It is necessary to the topic of discussion and no alternative exists,
  • It is presented in a respectful manner,
  • Participants are respectfully given ample warning and opportunity not to be a part of it.

This exception specifically does not allow use of gratuitous sexual images as attention-getting devices or unnecessary examples.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are required to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in any of the aforementioned behavior, leadership of the Athenas may take any action they deem appropriate, from warning the offender to immediately expelling the offender.

Reporting and Enforcement

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact Beth Duckles immediately. If you can’t or don’t wish to speak in person, or prefer to talk privately or electronically, contact me at or by direct message in Slack.
